What Is an Election District?
An Election District (ED) is the smallest unit of political geography in New York State — a defined neighborhood subdivision used to organize voters, administer elections, and structure party organizing at the most local level.

Every address in New York State falls within a specific Election District. Each ED has its own polling location on Election Day and is represented by elected ED Leaders within the local political party structure. In Suffolk County, ED Leaders are elected by registered Democrats in their district and serve as the grassroots foundation of the Suffolk County Democratic Committee.

Think of an Election District as your democracy’s most local address. It’s where organizing begins, where votes are cast, and where the relationship between a political party and a community is built — one neighbor at a time.
What Does an ED Leader Do?
An ED Leader serves as the direct link between their neighborhood and the Democratic Party. Their responsibilities include:

-
Engaging registered Democrats in their district through door-to-door canvassing, phone outreach, and community events
-
Recruiting and supporting volunteers for campaigns, phone banks, and civic activities
-
Encouraging voter registration, early voting, and Election Day turnout
-
Representing their district’s voters within the Suffolk County Democratic Committee
-
Connecting neighbors with resources, information, and opportunities to get involved in the democratic process
ED Leaders are not paid officials — they are volunteer civic leaders who show up for their community because they believe democracy works best when it starts at the neighborhood level.
