Biography

Dan Devine is a Long Island-based civic advocate, grassroots organizer, and digital content creator. He is the founder of American Civic Power — a nonprofit civic organization dedicated to advancing democracy and civic education — and the creator of CivicSphere, a civic technology and education platform available at mycivicsphere.com.

Civic Origins

Dan’s civic journey began in earnest in 1996, when he worked on a congressional campaign to unseat a long-standing incumbent linked to the local political machine. That experience ignited a lifelong commitment to electoral politics and public accountability, a commitment that has only deepened over the decades.

In 2015, Dan ran for the Nassau County Legislature — a campaign that sharpened his understanding of local government and the power of community organizing. That same year, a grassroots campaign he helped support in Hicksville opposing the removal of healthy street trees revealed to him how public decisions are routinely made without meaningful community input — and why civic engagement at the local level matters most.

Organizing Experience

In 2022, Dan served as a Field Organizer for the New York State Democratic Committee on a Long Island congressional campaign. Working alongside a team of organizers under an experienced Field Director, he made more than 100 voter contacts per day — recruiting volunteers, running phone banks, and canvassing to get out the vote.

On January 1, 2023, Dan attended the inauguration of Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli in Albany as a special guest — an experience he considers a milestone in his civic life.

Current Work

Today, Dan serves as an Election District (ED) Leader for the Suffolk County Democratic Committee, representing a district of about 270 registered voters in Huntington Station, NY. In this role, he works to strengthen local Democratic organizing, voter outreach, and community engagement at the neighborhood level.

Through American Civic Power and CivicSphere, Dan has developed the 12 Points of Good Governance — a civic education framework that helps citizens understand, evaluate, and hold accountable the institutions that govern their lives. He has also coined the civic vocabulary terms CIVESTOR™, CIVEST™, and CIVESTMENT™, reframing civic participation as an active investment in the future of democracy.

Dan builds and maintains all of ACP’s digital infrastructure — including this website and the CivicSphere platform — by combining civic mission with hands-on technical skills developed through years of self-directed learning.

A Personal Note

Dear fellow citizen,

Thank you for visiting this website to learn about American civics and to enhance your participation in our democracy — strengthening the foundations of our Constitutional Republic.

I am a lifelong resident of Long Island, New York. For much of my career, I worked in customer service at call centers for some of the region’s best-known companies. I excelled in those roles and earned recognition from management for outstanding service. But my most memorable and rewarding professional experience was serving as a Field Organizer for the New York State Democratic Committee — working alongside dedicated people who, like me, believe that democracy requires active participation to survive.

My civic awakening didn’t happen overnight. It grew from years of watching local decisions made behind closed doors, without community input — and from the conviction that ordinary citizens have both the right and the responsibility to push back. That conviction led me to run for office, knock on doors, make hundreds of calls, and eventually build the tools you’re using right now.

American democracy faces real and persistent threats — from the erosion of institutional norms to the concentration of political power to the suppression of civic participation. The antidote is not cynicism. It is engagement. An organized, informed citizenry is the most powerful force for democratic accountability ever seen.

I built American Civic Power and CivicSphere because I believe that every person who shows up — whether by voting, organizing, asking hard questions at a town hall, or running for local office — makes our democracy stronger. That includes you.

Thank you for being here. Let’s advance democracy together.

In solidarity,

Daniel Devine
